Why You're Still Stuck at $1/3 (It's Not Bad Luck)
In the last hand you played, why did you bet? Why did you check? Why did you make it $25 instead of $40? If someone stopped you mid-hand and asked you to explain your reasoning, could you actually do it? Not "it felt right" or "that's just how I play," but real, logical reasoning.
If you can't explain your decisions with logic, those decisions weren't made with logic. And that's exactly why most 1/3 players stay stuck.
Unexplained Poker
After coaching hundreds of players, one pattern shows up over and over. The players who stay stuck almost never have one huge leak. They have hundreds of tiny ones, and nearly every one of those leaks traces back to a decision they simply can't explain. That's what I call unexplained poker. You bet, check, call, or fold, and you don't really know why.
These decisions aren't random, but they aren't precise either. They come from "that's what I usually do," not from a real thought process. And the problem isn't that they're always wrong. The problem is you don't know when they're wrong, and that's exactly where the money quietly disappears.
How Bankrolls Actually Disappear
Most players imagine losing money through one big disaster: a terrible bluff, a bad hero call. That's not how it usually happens. It happens through a value bet that's $35 short, a river check-back out of uncertainty, a turn call made without ever pricing it out. None of these feel expensive in the moment. Multiply them across thousands of hands over years, and they quietly kill bankrolls.
Real Intuition vs. Fake Intuition
There's nothing wrong with intuition. The problem is most players confuse intuition with habit. Real intuition comes from understanding. Fake intuition comes from repetition. If you always bet half pot, eventually half pot just feels right, whether or not it's actually the most profitable size.
This is exactly why the PIPO framework exists: Precision In, Profits Out. Every profitable decision starts with precise information, precise assumptions, and precise reasoning. Vague thinking creates vague results.
Think Like a Casino
A casino doesn't know who wins the next hand of blackjack. It doesn't care. Every game it offers has a built-in mathematical edge, and it trusts that edge over thousands and thousands of decisions. That's exactly how winning poker players think. You don't control the next card. You control whether your decisions have an edge, and you let the math do the heavy lifting over time.
The Next Time You're at the Table
The next time you bet, check, or call, don't just ask yourself if it worked. Ask yourself if you can actually explain why you did it. If you can't, you just found a leak, and that's exactly where your next level of improvement is hiding.
