How to Crush Rangebets in 3Bet Pots
How to Crush Rangebets in 3-Bet Pots
Most players learn one rule for 3-bet pots and never learn where it stops working. The rule is simple: bet small, bet often, bet almost your entire range. On a lot of boards, that's exactly correct. But the rule has a boundary, and once you cross it, the same small bet that used to print money starts bleeding it instead.
Why the Range Bet Exists
When you 3-bet preflop, you're repping a tighter, stronger range. Villain, the one who called that 3-bet, is defending a wider one. On a lot of flops you simply have more strong hands than he does, more overpairs, more big aces, more premium broadways. A solver looks at that imbalance and bets small with basically its whole range, because it doesn't need much fold equity and it's rarely walking into a bad spot.
Try to imagine this hand. You open, get 3-bet, and call. Flop comes ace, seven, two, rainbow. Villain fires twenty five percent pot. You look down at nine eight offsuit and fold, because what else would you even continue with here. That's the range bet working exactly as designed, because his range crushes that board and yours doesn't.
Range Advantage vs Nut Advantage
These are not the same thing, and most 1 dollar 3 dollar and 2 dollar 5 dollar regs treat them like they are.
Range Advantage
On a board like ace seven two, villain has range advantage. He simply owns more strong hands overall, aces, overpairs, big broadways. That's why the small bet works there.
Nut Advantage
On a board like nine eight seven, the caller often has nut advantage instead. More sets, more two pair, more straights, more combo draws. Villain's overpairs are no longer invincible on this kind of board, even though he's still the preflop aggressor.
Which Boards Break the Range Bet
Low connected boards like eight seven six or nine eight seven are the clearest example. The caller's range hits these textures far harder than the 3-bettor's range does. Villain is still going to fire his usual twenty five percent here, because that's what he does on every flop. But now he's betting the same size, with the same confidence, into a board that no longer belongs to him.
Against the reg who fires one flop sizing no matter what, that twenty five percent bet gets called or raised profitably on connected boards close to seventy percent of the time, because his range simply doesn't hold up there. He's not adjusting his bet to the board. He's adjusting his board to fit his bet.
The Turn Is Where the Real Leak Lives
Say villain range bets an eight seven six flop, you call, and the turn comes a low blank. He checks. That check tells you something important. His flop bet was built to go one street and not two. Half his range wanted to fire once and get out. So when he checks that turn, you're looking at a compressed range. Almost none of his real monsters check here, because monsters keep betting. What's left is medium strength hands that hate any kind of pressure at all.
I ran this adjustment with a friend who kept complaining that regs at his card room were range betting him to death in 3-bet pots. We didn't change a single flop decision. We just built in one rule: stop fighting the flop bet and start attacking the turn check. Three months later he told me those exact hands had become some of his most profitable spots in the game, because he wasn't calling flops hoping to hit anymore. He was calling flops specifically to punish the turn.
The flop bet was never the mistake. It was the investment, and the turn is where the return gets collected, or lost.
The Real Leak
It isn't the sizing or the frequency. It's the fact that so many players copy a strategy built for one kind of board and fire it on every kind of board. Once you know that, you don't need to guess what villain is holding. You just need to know which street he's most uncomfortable on, and lean into that street as hard as you can.
The next time you're sitting in a 3-bet pot and villain fires that automatic small bet, don't ask yourself if you have a good enough hand to continue. Ask yourself who this specific board actually belongs to. And if the answer is you, don't just call planning to give up. Plan two streets ahead, because that's exactly where he's planning to stop thinking.
I see this exact leak play out over and over when I sit down with players one on one, and I've watched what happens once someone actually starts catching it. The ones who put in the work, three months later they aren't the same players anymore, and their win rate shows it.
